Item description from seller

4to, pp. [iv], 48; engraved vignette of the Sheldonian Theatre on title page; in modern cloth. First edition. Rochester's death at the age of 33 was held up as a caution to all those who had followed his scandalous life and read his libidinous poetry: this sermon, combined with Burnet's memoir, Some Passages (1680), made his agonising last illness a locus classicus for the penitence of even the worst offender combining all the fascination of sex, youth, aristocracy and poetry. Perceptions of Richardson's anti-hero Lovelace, and, later, Lord Byron, surely must have owed something to Rochester and his early death. Wing P575A. This is one of two variants, with the last line on the first page of text (B1r) beginning 'Relations,', instead of 'nearest Relations'. Provenance. 20th century inscription 'T. Loveday', a descendant of the Loveday family of Caversham see Sarah Markham, John Loveday: the life and tours of an eighteenth-century onlooker (1984).
