Slightly pulled at the front hinge title page (as is common with this heavy volume). Spine tight. ***198mm x140mm. xiii prelim pages plus 452 pages plus a four-page Important Works of Fiction catalogue, and a sixteen-page Selected List of Cassell & Company's Publications dated 10.96 (October 1896) on the first page of the catalogue. ***'Better known for his character Peter Pan, this first edition is the first of his two Tommy novels, "Sentimental Tommy" (1896) and "Tommy and Grizel" (1902), both dealing with themes closely related to what would become his iconic character, Peter Pan. "Sentimental Tommy: The Story of His Boyhood" deals with the imaginative childhood of Tommy Sands. The novel begins with him living in the London slums. He is protective to his baby sister, Elspeth, has a vivid imagination and is written in a vernacular style to draw the reader into his world, and is an interesting precursor to his character Peter Pan.'
