People think me cynical, but that is superficial. The bottom feeling is one of affection for almost everybody. " So WROTE BERTRAND RUSSELL IN 1911 to Lady Ottoline Morrell, the woman who was to become his mistress in a celebrated affair. Passion mixed with humility, conviction mixed with selfdoubt~this is the private side of the renowned philosopher, revealed here in letters never previously published. One of the towering intellectual figures of the twentieth century, Russell was not only a pioneering mathematician but also a radical social reformer, an outspoken champion of women's rights, a progressive peace activist, and an associate of the Bloomsbury group. Yet his public writings reveal none of the ardor or candor of his private letters. Here we see a man who suffered intensely from loneliness and conflicting emotions, whose unwavering moral convictions often cost him dearly in private relationships. This first of two volumes follows Russell from his childhood to his heady early days at Cambridge University, through his idealistic marriage to Alys Pearsall Smith and the trauma of its bitter breakdown. In his candid love letters to Ottoline Morrell he pours out the anguish and exhilaration of newfound love. With all his correspondents, he shares acute observations on politics, literature, philosophy, and art. He proves to be witty, biting, charming, and erudite all at once. Accompanied by commentary from the editor throughout, these letters amount to an intimate epistolary autobiography of a complex and fascinating man.
