Angel, Rabbi of Congregation Shearith Israel~the historic Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue of New York City, founded in 1654~has been a leading voice in contemporary Orthodoxy. During the twenty~five years of his rabbinic service, he has addressed the basic issues confronting the Jewish community. Through his many books and articles, as well as through his numerous lectures throughout North America, he has impacted upon many thousands of thoughtful and thinking people. A major contribution of Rabbi Angel has been his ability to draw on the vast reservoir of the Sephardic tradition, bringing new insight into Jewish sources and broadening the range of discussion. Hayyim J. Angel, son of Rabbi and Mrs. Marc D. Angel, has edited this volume in honor of his father's twenty~fifth anniversary of service to Congregation Shearith Israel. He has put together this collection of representative essays and addresses, in the areas of Jewish thought, Jewish law, Sephardica and general contemporary issues. Among the topics discussed in this book are the boundaries of authority and dissent in Judaism; an alternative to Jewish pluralism; halakhic approach to conversions; religious Zionism; Sephardic culture. Essays in this volume deal with such issues as dealing with the death of a parent, the Orthodox relationship with non~Orthodox Jews, the demands of rabbinic leadership, the problems of inter~marriage, inter~group relationships. In his quarter century of rabbinic service, Rabbi Angel has been dedicated to seeking good and speaking peace. The essays and addresses in this volume reflect his commitment to a high~minded, intellectually vibrant Orthodoxy. Readers will find this work informative and genuinely challenging.…
