Item description from seller

This SCARCE 278 pp. indexed Coffee Table style book was beautifully produced with gilt lettering on the spine & front board with slick pages throughout. SCRIP includes tokens & paper strips that were used by coal companies to pay their employees. These required said employees to use them as money, BUT ONLY AT THE MINING COMPANY STORES (where prices were elevated). The first 105 white pages explain the history of the companies and their use of Scrip, and have an index of the 110 mining companies scattered across 58 Harlan County communities. The next 157 pages are visually striking Black plates containing photographs of about 800 different pieces of scrip, from those mining companies. The book ends with acknowledgements, endnotes, bibliography & the General Index. It has 2 lightly bumped corners, but otherwise the book AND jacket are AS NEW. BECAUSE OF THE SIZE & WEIGHT, THE BOOK WILL NOT BE SHIPPED OUTSIDE THE CONTINENTAL U.S., UNLESS YOU CONTACT SELLER BEFORE ORDERING, SO THAT SHIPPING CAN BE ADJUSTED !.
