From the Back Cover
Working in the fierce heat of a Southern plantation, Jack dreams
of finding his sister and adopted family again. Making a daring
escape from a life of slavery, he hides away on a paddle steamer
traveling up the Mississippi. Then a little wooden horse turns his dream
into reality …
Stewart Lees’ vividly illustrated story, accompanied by a historical
note on slavery in the southern states, carries a powerful message
of hope.

RUNAWAY JACK
The time is the 1840s, and Jack, a young black slave, is sold at auction. Separated from Molly, his younger sister, he is sent to Mississippi, where he is forced to work in the cotton fields for a harsh and demanding master. Making his escape, he stows away on a Mississippi steamer. It would seem only a matter of time before Jack is discovered, captured, and sent back to the plantation, but good fortune is with him. Directed by a kindly boatman to a group of Quakers, Jack is helped by them in his northward flight to freedom. Then, Jack receives an astonishing surprise -- a surprise that gives him great happiness.
