1821. First edition - volume 2 only (of 2). [ii], 272pp. plus a 2 page publisher's catalogue. Maria Edgeworth (1768-1849) was a prolific Anglo-Irish writer of adults' and children's literature. She was one of the first realist writers in children's literature and was a significant figure in the evolution of the novel in Europe. Her best known works today are possibly 'Castle Rackrent' and 'The Absentee'. For sale is the second volume only of the story of Rosamond, one of the characters in her earlier work 'Early Lessons'. The book is bound in contemporary green quarter leather over marbled boards with a paper title label on the spine. The case of the book is in good to very good condition with some expected signs of the age. The boards have shelf wear with soiling and the corners are bumped with damage and some loss to the paper covering the corner tips. There is damage and loss of up to about 1/4" of the leather at both spine ends and a small hole in the leather near the bottom of the spine. The leather on the front spine edge is split down most of its length, leaving the front board feeling a bit loose. The title label on the spine is worn with loss near the top. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks. There is no inscription. Seller Inventory # gNet093
