New York. 1981. Routledge Kegan Paul. 1st Edition. Very Good in Dustjacket. 0710007752. 220 pages. hardcover. keywords: Reference. DESCRIPTION - This illustrated dictionary, a successor to the bestselling ROOM'S DICTIONARY OF CONFUSIBLES, aims to distinguish both between those everyday nouns whose meanings almost, but not quite, overlap - such as boat' and ship', divan' and couch', jersey and jumper, - and also between more specialized nouns that are often used professionally and can cause problems for the layman, such as director' and producer', measles', and German measles', and rugby league' and rugby union'. Also distinguished are some confusing opposites such as Democrat' and Republican,', evening dress' and morning dress', infra-red rays' and ultra-violet rays'. An introduction defines distinguishables as such and explains how the dictionary is arranged. Over 1,300 nouns are distinguished, in pairs or larger groups, and in this dictionary, which ranges from the homely rabbit' and hare' to the abstruse type I error' and type II error', the reader will find the answer to such perennial problems as: What is the difference between a donkey and an ass? Is a chain store also a multiple store? Who was the original Paul Pry? When is a cartoon a caricature? Altogether this dictionary should provide hours of informative and entertaining reading and will enlighten as well as distinguish, inform as well as educate. inventory #6318.…
