From the Publisher
'original and beautifully illustrated book...We are reminded what the churches, the mosaics and the frescoes, the Cosmatesque floors and the sacred relics signify. Their beauty becomes ever more poignant, a rebuke to current material preoccupations. It is rare for scholarship to attempt to make such a point, and only a Byzantinist of the calibre of Herbert Kessler and someone as skilled in communication as Johanna Zacharias could succeed.' - Terence Mullaly - Journal of the British-Italian Society
