He defines the significance of Roman urbanism and Roman architecture as a vehicle for the political and cultural extension of the Empire to the barbarian west and the Hellenized east; discusses the Roman concepts of personality and portraiture, the missionary role of historical reliefs, and the growth of the luxury arts to fulfil the demands of a cosmopolitan taste; and depicts the conflict between the pagan ideas of imperial Rome and rising Christianity and their interpenetration.
