He has been transformed in the public's eye from the most shocking photographer of the seventies to the most celebrated photographer of his generation. Described as the equivalent of a court painter to the New York avant-garde, with an immense body of portraits of leading artists of his time, Mapplethorpe has also photographed a private sexual arena with unsurpassed elegance, often abstracting the human body and desire with pure geometric form. This sensuality has been extended into his exquisite studies of flowers, now executed in color. ***The book is published on the occasion of Mapplethorpe's first major American museum exhibition, at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and it includes essays from three distinguished contributors, Richard Howard, Richard Marshall, and Ingirid Sischy. It reproduces earl work from the seventies, a number of unique works, and a substantial body of new colour work. It is the definitive volume on one of the world's most disturbing, elegant, and seductive photographers. ' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***First impression of the true first edition, printed on nice photographic quality paper, sumptuously illustrated with Robert Mapplethorpe's photographs in colour and duo-tone, complete in the original dustwrapper. Of interest to collectors of the work of the renowned photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, and the New York avant-garde art scene. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 8691z
