"This definitive biography is the first extended study of the life and works of the poet Robert Lowell. It is based largely on unique and original sources made available to Ian Hamilton by Lowell's heirs and friends. What is revealed in these pages will be indispensable to any future interpreters of the complex relations between Lowell's life and poetry. Lowell was the outstanding American poet of his generation, the winner of two Pulitzer prizes, and a public figure whose political actions gave him a celebrity rarely enjoyed by serious artists in our times. The portrait that emerges here is that of a deeply passionate man who transformed both the public and the most private events of his life--his Boston Brahmin heritage, his imprisonment as a conscientious objector during World War II, his turbulent family life, and his recurrent and destructive mental illness--into an unmistakably original and often great poetry. [] Ian Hamilton's biography delves into the historical and familial as well as the psychological origins of Lowell's conception of himself as a poet and shows us a man whose aristocratic heritage gave him a perspective on the present that made him unique among his contemporaries--Jarrell, Tate, Bishop, Roethke, and Berryman. By analyzing Lowell's own statements about his sense of his place in literature and speaking with the people who knew Lowell best, Hamilton illuminates Lowell's desire to expose his most intimate thoughts and feelings to any and all who would read his poetry. Hamilton has based this biography--in which subtle and enlightening readings of the poems are woven seamlessly into the enthralling narrative of Lowell's life--on extensive interviews and other hitherto unavailable primary sources." [jacket copy] "A powerful and affecting portrait . . . The tale Hamilton has to tell, and tells so well, is as complicated as it is compelling."--Richard Ellmann, The New York Times Book Review. Bright & tight hardcover w/sharp corners & crisp deckle edges (slight foxing on top edge), a square binding, all wrapped in an intact Good yellow jacket.
