After the crisis in emerging market economies in the mid-late 1990s, the adoption of internationally recognized standards, or codes of good practice, was seen as a way to help strengthen the international financial system. This volume examines whether the standards and codes exercise can make a meaningful contribution to global financial stability and examines the developing country perspective. It takes the first steps in answering some of the open questions in the field.

About the Author

BENU SCHNEIDER is currently serving as Economic Affairs Officer in the Globalization division at UNCTAD. Her other career positions include Research Fellow at ODI, from where the conference resulting in this volume was organized, Professorial position at ICRIER, full time consultant to the Reserve Bank of India and World Bank. She holds a doctorate in Economics from the University of Kiel, Germany, has authored books and several articles on international finance. She has also provided policy advice to countries on macro policies and domestic financial sector reforms including a background paper for the Narasimham Committee on Banking Reforms in India. -
