From the Author
History of Western ritual magic, its beliefs and practices.
The purpose of this book is to set modern Western ceremonial magic into its historical and conceptual context. It traces the evolution of the magical practices and beliefs that are being employed by working ritualists in the present day from their roots in ancient Babylon, Egypt, Greece and Rome, through their rebirth during the Renaissance, and their modern revival by the occultists of 19th century France and England, such as Eliphas Levi and S. L. MacGregor Mathers. The modern focus is upon the history and practices of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, which produced the system of magic used presently by over 90% of the groups and individuals in the English-speaking world. Also contained in the book is a detailed definition of magic, what the newcomer to the art should and should not expect from magic, and an in-depth examination of the most important systems of magic being worked today, such as Thelema, Voudoun, Wicca, Druidism, Shamanism, Enochian magic, and Satanism. The most essential ritual techniques are also presented to allow the beginner to get a feel for what it is to work magic. The bibliography lists the key practical texts of modern ritual magic, and the glossary defines specific terms that have a unique meaning in magic.
