First hardcover edition, published by Houghton Mifflin and the Works Progress Administration, 1937. Part of the series of books published by the WPA as guides to the states, regions, and cities of the United States. Each book follows a uniform format including essays on the state's history and culture, descriptions of its major cities, detailed auto tours of important attractions, and sections of b&w photographs. The project was led by Henry Alsberg, a journalist and playwright, and Benjamin Botkin, who was in charge of compiling the folklore for each book. The project provided work for more than 6,500 men and women as writers, collecting stories, interviews, and photographs on a variety of subjects. Each book covers a variety of topics; History, Geography, Agriculture, Tourist attractions, Education, Religion, Folklore and Folkways, Ethnic Groups, Architecture, Arts, Sports and Recreation, and Business and Industry. This is a first printing of the Rhode Island guide, published in 1937. 500 pages, 5-1/2" x 8-1/4". Line drawing map of the state on the front pastedown - front endpaper pages. Several sections of b&w photos. No dust jacket. Some of the guides included a folded map stored in a pocket at the back pastedown, the first printing of the Rhode Island guide did not include a map. No writing, no former ownership marks. Dark red fabrikoid covered boards. Title on the spine panel and front cover board. Spots of rubbing wear to the covers at the edges of the head and heel of the spine panel and tips of the corners. This is not a library discard copy.
