Add to basketStapled heavy paper cover. First edition of an early work by Tom Hayden reporting on his time in Mississippi as a field representative of The Students for a Democratic Society. Hayden went on to author the Port Huron Statement (1962) and serve as president of SDS (1962-3). The cover by Isaac Trompetter depicts a baton-armed policeman, with attack dog, pursuing an African-American man. In the background is a map of Mississippi. The back cover contains three entries profiling Tom Hayden, the Students for a Democratic Society and The League for Industrial Democracy. There are no marks, folds or creases to the text, but both covers have perceptible sunning and most interior pages have evidence of light damp stains. (see seller s photos for examples) In addition to the Hayden report, this pamphlet contains and opening statement from Charles McDew, then Chairman of SDS, the words to We Shall Overcome on the title page, and a letter dated November 1, 1961 from the legendary voter registration activist Bob Moses. The inside back cover lists executive committee members of the League and SDS as well as SDS staff. It is an inventory of early to mid-1960s civil rights and social activists. This is a scarce item and an opportunity to obtain a primary document from a watershed era of American history. It is lamentably not in prime condition, but is fully legible and with sound binding. 28 pages, with original order sheet included. $70.
