Add to basketWell, I don't know, this is all very complicated and I'm not sure I follow it! There was a book by Leon Garfield called "Mister Corbett's Ghost" which was published in America by Pantheon in 1968 and by Longman in the U.K. in 1969. It contained the title story and two others: "Vaarlem and Tripp" and "The Simpleton". Then, again in 1969, comes this book from Pantheon in which the title story is changed, but the other two stories are the same as the other collection, and this one doesn't appear to have a U.K. edition although "The Restless Ghost" introduced the characters Bostock and Harris who go on to feature in their own book called, in the U.K. at least, "Bostock and Harris" but which was re-titled "The Night of the Comet" in the U.S. edition. And "The Restless Ghost" is about the ghost of a drummer boy who doesn't seem to be connected with the title character of Leon Garfield's other 1969 book from Pantheon, "The Drummer Boy". Anyway, leaving all that aside, what we have in this current volume are the three excellent stories mentioned, each "touched with the macabre", and the atmospheric, full page, illustrations of Saul Lambert. There is an unusual bookplate on the front pastedown of this copy, otherwise it is near fine in a very good dust jacket, price-clipped and slightly worn and nicked at extremities with some internal tape strengthening.
