On the inside cover in black ink the following has been written, "WARD ROOM MESS USS ROANOKE JOHN DOVER NEWBURYPORT MASS G BECK. The USS Roanoke was the only three turreted Monitor built during the Civil War. Originally a steam frigate, sister ship of the Merrimack which the Confederates converted to the CSS Virginia.The Roanoke was also a conversion. Four maps, three of which are folding. Solid copy.
