Item description from seller

East Saginaw, Mich. [Michigan]: Evening News Printing and Binding House, 1886. 8vo, blue printed wrappers with black cloth spine, 76 pages. Front wrap with soft vertical crease line; spine expertly reinforced with tissue; old, inexpert tape repair to bottom of t.p., at left of imprint; contents clean. Very good. bjcb 352251 First edition. The first forty pages are devoted to a history of West Point, followed by a complete register, by year, starting with 1802, of all of the graduates of West Point to 1886. Page 52 lists Henry Ossian Flipper (1856–1940) as a graduate of the Class of 1877. Flipper was the first person of color to graduate from West Point. He took part later in the Indian Wars of the Southwest, was accused of embezzlement in 1882, and though acquitted, was given a dishonorable discharge. Flipper became a prominent civil engineer and in the 1920’s was an assistant to the Secretary of the Interior. In 1978, after his discharge was finally changed to honorable, he was reinterred with full military honors." (Blockson) This copy with the autograph ("J. Brisbane 1888") and his ownership stamps. Brisbane may have been a relative of Abbot H. Brisbane, a West Point graduate who is shown as having died in 1861 during the American Civil War.…
