Retired library copy with index numbers written on the rear pastedown. Book is tight, square, and unmarked but for the index numbers. Book Condition: Good +; scars on the endpapers from where pockets and slips were removed; light shelfwear to head, tail, and tips; light sunfading to spine; small closed tear on first three pages. No DJ. Maroon cloth boards and spine with embossed decorations on the boards and gilt lettering on the spine. Decorative endpapers. 364 pp (204 pp, 160 pp) 12mo. The author writes these two books from his position as Corresponding Secretary of the Historical Society of Kansas about the happenings in Kansas while Walker was acting at the appointed governor of the territory of Kansas by President James Buchanan. He felt that the citizens of Kansas should be left free to choose to have slavery which was quite contentious at the time and when the Leacompton Constitution was not supported by Buchanan, he resigned. This book is taken from the author's writings that were published as a series in the Rockford, IL "Gazette" and updated with additional information held in the Historical Society. The second book, "False Claims" is based on information from the Historical Society (and from his time as a newspaper editor of the Herald of Freedom in Lawrence KS 1854-59) that contradicts many of the stories about the time from the pro-salvery side of the argument.
