Illustrated with 24 photographic plates. Language: English. Book Condition> Very Good+: Sharp corners, edges and spine. Clean unmarked cloth. Tightly bound with minor spotting to intact endpapers with strong hinges. Clean unmarked pages. Very light tanning to text block edges. DJ Condition> Good: Wear and chipping to upper edge with 1.5cm missing section and 1cm tear to upper front edge. Minor tears and loss to upper spine end and corners. Minor wear to lower edge. Light stain to rear fold over edge. Rubbing and a few spots to covers. Unclipped. Pages [xlii], 373 including Index, Appendices and Bibliographical Note . Size: 8vo, 23.5cm by 15.5cm. Book Resume: Dr Helmcken was in the employ of the Hudson's Bay Company as surgeon for the whole of Vancouver Island Arriving in Victoria in 1850, he married a daughter of Governor James Douglas, and became politically involved and was elected to the first Legislative Assembly He was also among the delegation negotiating Union with Canada The original 'Reminiscences' are held by the Provincial Archives Dorothy Smith is owed a debt of gratitude for her editing of these materials for presentation to a wider audience, as they are of interest not only as a social and political history of 19th Century British Columbia, but also as an early medical history of the province, and of the operations of the HBC.
