The rich legends spun between the years 1000 and 1250 C.E. by the monks of Southwestern France explain the origins of their communities are the subject of this provocative study. The author explores the monastic foundation legends in all their varieties---including forged charters, hagiographic texts, chansons de geste, architecture and sculpture--to show how such imaginings of the past affirmed the liberty and identity of the abbeys of the then present. Three king stand at the center of the legends: Clovis, Pippin the Short, and above all, Charlemagne.
