nclude works from collections abroad. Highlighting the authentic Rembrandts that came to America during the late nineteenth-century's Gilded Age, when tycoons such as J. P. Morgan and Henry C. Frick cultivated a passion for collecting European masterpieces, the catalogue and show also feature fifteen to twenty works originally attributed to Rembrandt but now recognized as paintings by his former pupils, contemporary followers, or later imitators. Rembrandt's reputation rests largely on his ability to depict light and shadow. In addition to portraits, he is best known for historical scenes, including biblical depictions. He is ranked by many alongside Shakespeare, Beethoven, and Michelangelo for creative genius of character. The exhibition and catalogue feature portraits and character studies, as one might expect from Rembrandt, a crowd of very well dressed Dutch burghers. It includes at least three self-portraits, including the 1659 version at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and valued for its pristine condition. Text includes an introduction on Rembrandt as a cultural phenomenon, and three essays on Rembrandt's life and the controversy and confusion associated with his workshop, and the pursuit of Rembrandt in America, respectively. The works in the catalogue are discussed in groupings, chronologically and thematically: Early Leiden Years (intro); Early Tronies/Fantasy Portraits; Early Amsterdam Years (Experimentation in Portraits/Glamour in the Big City); Rembrandt's Middle Years (1640s) and Maturity (1650s); History Pictures; and Rembrandt's Late Paintings. Organized by the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Lenders include: The Metropolitan Museum of Art; The Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The Cleveland Museum of Art; National Gallery of Art; Fogg Museum; Minneapolis Institute of Arts; Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art; J. Paul Getty Museum; North Carolina Museum of Art
