About this Item
Edition originale. Hugo supporting belief in God but attacking organized religion. Association copy signed by Hugo to to Jules Simon, philosopher, politician and academician, elected in 1875. Victor Hugo and Jules Simon were animated by the same desire to see the death penalty abolished; the first wrote extensively on this subject and concerned public opinion (The Last Day of a Convict, Claude Gueux, Tapner Affair, articles in the press, speeches and pleadings before the Chamber of Peers, the Assembly and the Senate, etc); the second published in 1869 a work entitled 'La Peine de mort' dedicated to Hugo: "To VH I cannot put your name in full, because it is too big, and my gift too small. The title of this volume is my excuse to offer it to you. The death penalty will soon disappear from our Codes; and it is you who will have erased it. France, the last Western European country to practise the death penalty abolished it in 1981. An important landmark of French history. In original half blue leather, marbled boards, endpapers.
