The very scarce first edition in book form of this series of essays regarding the nature of laughter and in response to Bernard Mandeville's 'The Fable of The Bees'. Very scarce. ESTC T4946. With a leaf of publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work. Rebound in modern quarter calf with endpapers renewed and blanks discarded. The first edtion in book form. The work first appeared in the Dublin Journal in 1725 consisting of six letters; the first three regarding the nature of laughter (which later became 'Reflections Upon Laughter') and the second three a response to Bernard Mandeville's 'The Fable of the Bees' (which later became 'Remarks Upon the Fable of The Bees). Both essays sought to refute cynical theories regarding human nature and instead defend virtue and moral sentiment. Written by Francis Hutcheson, a major figure in the Scottish Enlightement, and influence on Adam Smith and David Hume. Rebound in modern quarter calf with endpapers renewed and blanks discarded.Externally in lovely condition. Title silked and laid down. Pages generally bright and clean with marginal age toning and the odd spot. Near Fine.
