Item description from seller

224 pages. Footnotes. Cover has wear and soiling. Small edge tears. Some page browning. Nathaniel Weyl (1910 - 2005) was an American economist and author who wrote on a variety of social issues. A member of the Communist Party of the United States from 1933 until 1939 but, after leaving the party, he became a conservative and avowed anti-communist. In 1952 he played a minor role in the Alger Hiss case. Weyl accepted a post as head of the Latin American research unit at the Federal Reserve Board and later moved to the Board of Economic Warfare. He served overseas in the Army for two years during World War II. After the war, he became a journalist and author and earned an income from investments. Two of Weyl's books, Treason (1950) and Red Star Over Cuba (1961), received some critical interest and discussion in their times. Red Star Over Cuba postulates that Fidel Castro was a covert Communist before the Cuban Revolution and had been recruited by the Soviets while he was a teenager. This is the shocking story of how a People's Republic was born within 90 miles of our United States frontiers. It is the equally shocking story of the part played by our own State Department in handing Cuba over to the bearded dictator Fidel Castro, despite specific warnings from two recent Cuban Ambassadors that Castro's movement was a Communist one, Soviet inspired. Nathaniel Weyl knows his Latin America. A former Communist, he belonged to the same cell as Alger Hiss during the '30' s and devoted his time to Latin American affairs while in the party. A Columbia graduate, author of such books as ''The Reconquest of Mexico" and "The Negro in American Civilization," he is thoroughly qualified to write this account of the changes that have taken place in Cuba. Revised and Updated Edition. First printing thus.
