Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. First Edition. Octavo, 152pp., illustrated. A crisp, clean copy, near fine, in the publisher's dark maroon cloth. Very mild even dust-soiling to the boards, but a firm, sound example. A very rare regimental history volume for this cavalry unit, which saw action in New Market, Appomattox (where they fought alongside Custer, right before Lee surrendered -- a portrait of Custer and his farewell address to his troops is included in the book), and elsewhere, from August 1863 through the end of the war. More than a dozen unit members perished from disease at Andersonville, and their names are listed herein, along with the cause of death. This copy bears a gift inscription reading "Truman P. LaMay, from his Grandfather LaMay." A "Peter Lamay" is listed in the roll for Company K in the rear of this volume, and this is almost certainly the "Grandfather" and author of that gift inscription. Auction records reveal just two sales in the past century, otherwise last appearing in a Goodspeed catalogue in 1945. This important regimental history missed by Broadfoot, and not in the Union Bookshelf. Nevins I, p. 138. A Civil War regimental rarity, in appealing condition. Seller Inventory # 8537
