The book focuses on the lives and loves of a group of women in Paris, exploring themes of love, relationships, and the search for happiness and stability in the face of life's challenges. The story, set in Paris, features four main female characters: Eleanor: A 35-year-old model who possesses beauty and confidence but struggles with the instability of relationships with men who are unwilling to commit to marriage. Colette: A very young woman married to one of Eleanor's former lovers, who is deeply affected by a distressing event, leading her to contemplate suicide. Luce: Happily married to Denis, another of Eleanor's past partners. Monique: Luce's sister, who works at a hospice for prostitutes and, while attempting to help a girl in need, finds herself encountering another form of love and connection. The novel explores the contrast between the innocence of hope and the realities of experience, often focusing on the paradoxical interplay of sentimental ideals and sensual desires.
