THE REACH OF ROME A History of the Roman Imperial Frontier 1st -5th Centuries AD Derek Williams. Constable Publishing, London 1996 First edition ISBN 0094765405 342pp Illustrated Hardback This copy is in FINE condition in a FINE unclipped dustwrapper. A racy chatty narrative of the historical events built around the frontiers from Augustus to the fifth century, laced with sharp scenes of local topography and spiced with vignettes of eminent archaeologists. This book bulges with fascinatiing information about the frontiers of Rome, and why ultimately the defences were of little use. Bringing together all aspects of fortification design, foreign policy, and changing strategies to deal with a changing world, the book serves as an object lesson of just why the (western) Roman Empire fell.
