Item description from seller

Publication: Preston, Printed by W. and J. Dobson, Chronicle Office; London, Simpkin, Marshall, and Co., 1864 Formatting: 8vo, pp. [vi], 144. Condition Report: Very Good. The original dark green ribbed-cloth boards remain remarkably sound and attractive, retaining crisp gilt titling to the front board and well-defined floral blind-stamping to both panels. There is minor rubbing to the extremities, primarily to the spine ends and board corners, but the binding remains tight, square, and robust. Internally, the text block is generally clean, showing only typical mild, even toning to the page edges and preliminary leaves. The front free endpaper bears a neat contemporary ink ownership signature ("James E. Thompson"), adding a pleasing touch of Victorian provenance. An unusually well-preserved example, entirely free of major foxing, splitting, or modern restoration. Catalogue Note: This is the true first edition in book form, published simultaneously in Preston and London in 1864. Originally appearing as a popular series of regional sketches in the Preston Chronicle, Dobson revised and expanded these topographical pieces to form this independent "First Series," capturing the landscape, history, and folklore of Ribblesdale. The volume is presented in its original publisher's blind-stamped cloth. It is increasingly uncommon to find provincial 19th-century guides of this nature in such unsullied, original condition, as they were often heavily used as pocket companions or subsequently rebound by local lending libraries. The presence of a contemporary Victorian signature offers an authentic period charm without detracting from the book's highly collectible state. A charming mid-Victorian topographical guide, Rambles by the Ribble invites readers on a historical and descriptive journey through the picturesque landscapes of Lancashire’s Ribble Valley. Written by William Dobson, a renowned local historian and journalist, this original 1864 volume blends regional folklore, antiquarian observations, and natural beauty into an engaging narrative. Perfect for collectors of British topography or local Lancashire history, this beautifully preserved work offers a fascinating window into the rural heart of 19th-century Northern England. …
