From the Publisher
Historical myth-breaker Uri Milstein has the legend of "Mr. Security" in his sights in his new book, "The Rabin File: An Unauthorized Expose"
As a leading authority on Israeli military history, and a veteran of both the 1967 and 1973 wars, Dr. Uri Milstein has made a name for himself by contesting historical myths that a vast majority of Israelis have no desire to challenge. Not surprisingly, his approach has not garnered much popularity in a society which still clings dearly to the legendary fighting valor of her military heroes - the most prominent of which was Yitzhak Rabin.
For more than 50 years, Yitzhak Rabin had a direct impact on the political, social and economic fabric of the Jewish State. Both in Israel and throughout the world, people view the late Israeli Prime Minister, Defense Minister and the Chief-of-Staff during the Six Day War of 1967, as a wise and courageous leader.
In "The Rabin File - An Unauthorized Expose," Dr. Uri Milstein delves into Rabin's military performance - from his early involvement in the militia in 1941 to his assassination in 1995 - and reveals Rabin's controversial security career to be a disturbing collection of blunders, failures, incompetence and politically driven expedience.
Although President Clinton eulogized Rabin as a "martyr for peace," Milstein has no qualms in finding fault with the "Exalted Generalissimo." One of Israel's foremost scholars and a man with strong convictions, Dr. Milstein is no stranger to controversy. When his Hebrew version of The Rabin File was published in 1995, just a few months before Rabin's assassination, Rabin and his aides tried to ban the book and censor its author. Despite them, "The Rabin File" was an Israeli bestseller, with over 10,000 copies sold in one year.
Now that "The Rabin File" has been published in English, making it accessible to millions of readers, will Jews and Israelis have the courage to face this unflattering portrait of their grandest modern-day hero? If they do, will the carefully constructed walls of Rabin's legacy will be able to stand the blow?
