A collection of FIVE BRITISH PARLIAMENTARY ACTS relating to Roman Catholic Relief. London: 1778, 1791, 1803, 1829, and 1832. All first editions. Neatly extracted from bound volumes. The Roman Catholic Relief Acts were a series of laws intended to reduce and remove the many restrictions that had been placed on Roman Catholics. The collection includes: (Item 1) An Act for relieving His Majesty's Subjects professing the Popish Religion from certain Penalties and Disabilities imposed on them by an Act, made in the Eleventh and Twelfth Years of the Reign of King William the Third, intituled, An Act for the further preventing the Growth of Popery. 18 George III, Chapter 60. London: Charles Eyre and William Strahan, 1778. Folio (12 inches). General title leaf + pages 1051-1055. Woodcut Royal coat of arms, headpiece, and decorative initial. Text in Black Letter. Light tide mark along upper edge. Known as the Papists Act, 1778 (or Roman Catholic Relief Act, 1778), the law allowed Roman Catholics to join the army and to own property and inherit land, subject to an oath that renounced Stuart claims to the throne and the civil jurisdiction of the pope. (Item 2) An Act to relieve, upon Conditions, and under Restrictions, the Person therein described, from certain Penalties and Disabilities to which Papists, or Persons professing the Popish Religion, are by Law subject. 31 George III, Chapter 32. Known as the Roman Catholic Relief Act, 1791, the law gave Roman Catholics freedom of worship and removed certain political, educational, and economic restrictions, provided they recite the Declaration and Oath as printed in the Act. It also allowed for Catholics to practice law and operate their own schools. (Item 3) An Act to entitle Roman Catholicks taking and subscribing the Declaration and Oath contained in the Act of the Thirty-first Year of the Reign of His present Majesty, … [and by] an Act of the Eighteenth Year of the Reign of His present Majesty … 43 George III, Chapter 30. This Act declared that the benefits for Roman Catholics as outlined in the Act 18 George III, Chapter 60 can be achieved by taking the Declaration and Oath as outlined in 31 George III, Chapter 32. (Item 4) An Act for the Relief of His Majesty's Roman Catholic Subjects. 10 George IV, Chapter 7. George Eyre and Andrew Strahan, 1829. Folio (11.25 inches). Caption title, pages 105-116. Known as the Roman Catholic Relief Act, 1829, the law allowed Roman Catholics to sit in parliament, vote in elections, and hold public office. (Item 5) An Act for the better securing the Charitable Donations and Bequests of His Majesty's Subjects in Great Britain professing the Roman Catholic Religion. 2 & 3 William IV, Chapter 115. George Eyre and Andrew Spottiswoode, 1832. Folio (11.5 inches). Caption title, pages 1025-1027. Known as the Roman Catholic Charities Act, 1832, the law subjected Roman Catholics to the same laws as Protestant dissenters with respect to schools and places of religious worship, education, and charitable purposes.
