Item description from seller

First printing of the true first edition. ***A near fine copy in green cloth-covered boards with silver titles to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked, Head and tail of spine just slightly creased. Corners sharp. The page block edges are lightly tanned but clean. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions, just a small owner's book sticker on the front free endpaper. No creases or tears. Spine tight. ***In a near fine colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £8.50 net. The dustwrapper is only very slightly rubbed and creased at the extremities. No creases, tears or chips. No fading to the red colour on the spine. Dustwrapper bright. ***245 pages. 206mm x 135mm.***'The novel is based upon a Victorian murder case of 1891-2 and derives from the author's documentary "The Ripper's Apprentice" in his successful BBC series "The Detectives". It has been suggested that the 'apprentice' was also Jack the Ripper himself. The sombre squalor of the Victorian streets of London is made vivid. ***Donald Thomas is distinguished as a biographer and a poet, but his studies of Victorian crime have also brought distinction. Here he has used his knowledge and his gifts to terrifying effect.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper. ***A fine first edition of interest to collectors of Victorian period English crime novels and Jack The Ripper. We also have a copy of Donald Thomas' "Jekyll, Alias Hyde" published in 1988. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…
