Dr. Manuel González Echeverría (1833 - 1898) was a highly influential 19th-century Cuban neuropsychiatrist widely recognized as one of his time's foremost authorities on epilepsy. His work shifted the perception of epilepsy away from superstition toward an understanding rooted in the brain and nervous system. This specific work, a standalone reprint of a paper first published by Echeverria in the New York Medical Journal, focuses on "reflex paralysis" (known today as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) and its connection to the sympathetic nervous system. In the foreword, Echeverria thanks Friedrich Wilhelm von Egloffstein "for his kindness and valuable assistance in reproducing, in the most minute and delicate manner, by his admirable process of heliography on steel, the photographic copy and microscopic drawings of the specimens described in these pages", referring to the photographic plates. 1414464.
