About this Item
The Boy's Illustrated Library of Heroes Patriots & Pioneers. First impression of the first UK edition, published circa 1881. No printed date. Originally published in the USA by Dodd, Mead in 1878. ***Illustrated with seven black and white plates as called for, including attractive black and white full-page frontispiece: 'Red Eagle: The Chieftan's Threat.' Please note that the plate 'The Battle' for page 76 is not missing but misplaced by the printer opposite page 288 (see accompanying pictures). Plates being mis-bound occurs surprisingly often in antiquarian books. Illustrations also include battle plan: 'Plan of the Great Horse Shoe Battle' to page 318. Attractive decorative black and white chapter-heads, chapter-ends and small illustration to title-page. ***A good copy in burgundy decorative cloth-covered boards with red titles on gilt block and gilt borders with black decorations to spine, and front board and blind borders to rear board. All edges of text-block gilt. Grey front and rear endpapers and pastedowns. Tiny contemporaneous bookseller's label to bottom of front pastedown: 'Anthony Hordern & Sons, Palace Emporium, Haymarket, Sydney.' Very shallow 2mm loss to small area of fore-edge of half-title page. Edges of boards rubbed and marked. Head and tail of spine slightly bumped. Spine tight. Contemporaneous owner's name and date in fountain pen ink on half-title page: 'Meg Halan, Australia, 1903. Also a child's pencil name 'Dorota' above this, and repeated in pencil, rubbed out but still faintly visible to ends of chapters on pages 113, 242, 266, 288 (back of a plate), 317, end of last text-page page 346, and on page 143 over the text. Gutter of spine on pages 114-5 very slightly split towards top but tight. Spine tight. Tiny unobtrusive closed tear and associated crease to top of page 83-4 not affecting text. No foxing to pages. ***182 x 122 mm. xii-pages prelims including two-page preface by author, list of chapters and illustrations plus 346 text-pages plus eight-page publisher's catalogue to rear. Printed by W. Wilfred Head and Mark, printers, Fleet Street, Old Bailey, London E.C. ***'A work of this kind necessarily makes no pretension to originality in its materials; but while all that is here related is to be found in books, there is no one book devoted exclusively to the history of the Creek War or to the life of William Weatherford, the Red Eagle. The materials here used have been gathered from many sources - some of them from books which only incidentally mention the matters here treated, touching them as part of larger subjects, and many of them from books which have been long out of print, and therefore inaccessible to readers generally. Parton's and Eaton's Lives of Andrew Jackson, with Claiborne's Notes, and the American State Papers have been consulted. ***The following story is, therefore, compiled from authentic sources, and although so romantic as to be almost on a level with Fenimore Cooper's tales, the incidents all bear the stamp of truth, and can all be verified. Where any doubt has existed in the writer's mind, the various authorities have been diligently researched, and the facts have then been set down in the narrative.' (Taken from the preface by the author). ***Chief Red Eagle William Weatherford, also known as Lamochattee (Red Eagle) (c. 1780-1781 ¿ March 24, 1824), was a Creek chief of the Upper Creek towns who led the Red Sticks' offensive in the Creek War (1813¿1814) against the United States. ***The first impression of the first UK edition in the original Victorian decorative boards. ***Scarce. Only three copies of the first UK edition held in UK libraries: Oxford University, Cambridge University and the National Library of Scotland (Copac). ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 2784
