Item description from seller

First impression of the first UK edition, published in 1971. The book first appeared in the USA in 1967. ***Very good in scarlet cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. Edges of boards just very slightly rubbed, with some fading at the top edges. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Corners sharp. Top edge of page block stained black by the publisher - slightly faded. Page block edges clean. Internally also very good with no inscriptions. Pages clean with no foxing - just a small stain affecting the bottom edge of the rear free endpaper and last couple of pages of text. No off-setting to the endpapers. Paper stock nice and white. No creases or tears. No annotations. Spine tight with no reading lean. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £1.75 net. The dustwrapper is complete, with just some loss of surface colour and rubbing at the head and tail of the spine and the top corner of the front panel. The lettering is unaffected. Edges of dustwrapper slightly rubbed and creased. There is a 2cm closed tear at the top edge of the back panel near the spine, with some associated creasing. The spine of the dustwrapper is completely unfaded (including the sun-sensitive yellow and red titles). There is a vertical crease to the fore-edge of the front flap. ***223mm x 145mm. 246 pages. ***'Terry Southern knows and understands the aspirations of would-be hipsters, on-the-ball journalists, failed bullfighters and war veterans. Whether recreating a crazy car journey in Mexico, staging a hilarious drama with Kafka and Freud, speculating on the bizarre possibilities for blood transfusions or interviewing a faggot male nurse, he is an addictive storyteller, wise, cruel and funny. The stories in this collection, written over a twelve-year period, both speak for and send up their times.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A nice copy of the true first UK edition, in very good condition. Of interest to collectors of Terry Southern's work, and work by The Beats. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
