Item description from seller

[12] pp. In-text photographic illustrations. Original printed stiff orange wrappers, stapled. Staples moderately rusted, else fine. Pamphlet biography of Ray Myers (1911-1986), celebrated armless musician and radio personality. Raymond Robert Myers was born - without arms - to a farming family in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1911. According to the pamphlet, he was an energetic and precocious child who quickly adapted to his unusual anatomical circumstances. Around the age of two, "he was offered a job with a large well known circu[s] but his parents wanted him to grow up as a normal child saying that when he was old enough he could make up his own mind as to what he would rather do." After the death of his father and sale of his family farm when he was twelve, the Lions Club of New Holland, Pennsylvania, arranged for his education at the Good Shepherd Home in Allentown, which provided care and schooling for children with disabilities. Myers entered as a high school student and graduated with honors four years later. During this time, he played trombone with the Allentown High School band and learned to play steel guitar with his feet. Myers's musical virtuosity led him to perform at the 1933-34 World's Fair in Chicago, where he was engaged with the inaugural cohort of Robert Ripley's BELIEVE IT OR NOT! Odditorium performers. After returning to Pennsylvania, Myers appeared on a New Year's Eve radio broadcast, where he caught the ear of "Cowboy Loye" Pack, a famous radio vocalist then based in West Virginia. Cowboy Loye, to whom the pamphlet is co-dedicated, invited Myers to perform at his home station in Wheeling, and an active radio career across several states followed, finding Myers playing with many of the great country and old-time musicians of the day. At the time of this publication, Myers was affiliated with WNOX in Knoxville, Tennessee. The present work expands the content of a similar, earlier biography and shares photos of Myers in various active poses (playing guitar, driving, milking a cow) and of his family and colleagues. In the final paragraph, the author reveals herself to be Ray's loving wife, Eleanor Sturm Myers. OCLC records two copies. Rare.…
