Graham Greene's novel is set in Saigon and features his journalist character Thomas Fowler at the end of the French colonial era as the Americans are becoming involved in trying to thwart Communist advances in South Viet Nam. Fowler interacts with Alden Pyle, an American CIA operative, both of whom are romantically interested a Vietnamese woman, Phuong. This highly-regarded work was often imitated, such as with the novel "The Ugly American" or Jean-Claude Pomonti's "Un Vietnamien bien tranquille" (The Quiet Vietnamese). --- In reddish-brown paper-covered boards backed in black cloth, with gilt-stamped titling to spine; orange topstain.
