The first edition, first impression of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Ink inscription to the front free end paper, dated 1939. This tribute to the work of the British Red Cross includes a message from Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, as well as contributions from fifty authors and artists. This anthology was sponsored by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, to raise money for this humanitarian network during the Second World War.Illustrated with thirteen plates, some of which are in colour, by Cecil Beaton, William Russell Flint, Edmund Dulac, Dame Laura Knight, Rex Whistler, Mabel Lucie Attwell and many others. Collated, complete. With poetry, short stories and essays from John Masefield, T. S. Eliot, A. A. Milne, Daphne du Maurier, Walter de la Mare, Edith Evans, C. Day Lewis and many more. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is generally bright and smart, with a little fading and spotting to the spine and extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for offsetting to the end papers. Dust wrapper is generally smart, with a little chipping and darkening to the spine of the wraps, and a couple of small closed tears to the rear of the wraps. Very Good.
