Item description from seller

xvii, 414 pp; 52 text figures; 13 tables. Original cloth. Very Good. First Edition (so stated on the title page). This what Simpson wrote about this book "Quantitative Zoology" in his autobiography "Concession to the Improbable": "Although I was good at mathematics in college I had never so much as heard the word 'statistics' in my mathematics courses, not even to mention courses in the natural sciences. Anne [Roe], on the other hand, had learned basic statistical methods as essential in psychological research. I knew a good deal about zoology but very litle about statistics. Anne knew a good deal about statistics but very little about zoology. This complementary relationship suggested that development of the application of statistical and related quantitative methods to zoological studies could be forwarded by pooling our knowledge, a sort of figurative marriage of minds that began before and has continued ever since our marriage in the more literal or legal sense [that marriage occurred on May 27, 1938]. My own impulse toward the marriage of statistics, or more generally of quantitative methods, and zoology arose from increasing interest in methodology and theory in the study of evolution and of systematics. . . . The result of such considerations and of much work was a relatively simple but fairly comprehensive book on the application of quantitative, including statistical, methods to zoology. The text was completed in 1938 and published in 1939. The book was far from being a best-seller, but it did circulate widely . . . . I believe that the original publication gave impetus to a revoution in zoological methodology if it did not quite originate that movement" (pp.83-85).…
