Item description from seller

First edition, first impression. Pigou was a staunch freetrader, and "he was at that stage of his career prepared to appear on public platforms where his considerable powers of oratory were put to good effect. A pamphlet, The Riddle of the Tariff, appeared in 1903. A more technical treatment, leaning heavily on the standard Marshallian apparatus and coming out strongly against the policy of Imperial preference, appeared in 1906 on Protective and Preferential Import Duties" (The New Palgrave 3, pp. 876-877). At the time, protective tariffs were a contentious issue, and were a major factor in the landslide defeat of the Conservative Party in the General Election of that year. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Ex-library with University of Manchester blind stamp to title and following few leaves, yet nonetheless a very good copy, slight lean to spine, contents clean and unmarked.
