Pittsburgh, PA: W. G. Johnston & Co., c. 1864. First Edition. Octavo. Original light green paper wrappers with a simple minimalist title block on the front cover; plain cream rear wrapper. Original thread stitch-binding.An incredibly rare, surviving artifact from the mid-1860s American petroleum rush centered around Pennsylvania and Ohio. This internal corporate prospectus outlines the financial structure of the Muskingum Oil Spring Petroleum Company, noting a Capital Stock of $500,000 divided into 100,000 shares at $5 each, with 25,000 shares assigned for working capital.Unique Historical Notes: The blank leaf facing the title page features a full page of highly detailed, contemporary 1860s pencil notations tracking actual stock transactions, investor names ("Murray," "Smith," "Raley"), percentages of profit, and corporate associations with the "Malta Oil Co."Condition: Very Good. Wrappers show typical light toning and minor edge wear consistent with mid-19th-century paper ephemera. Small vintage dealer/archive numbers written in pencil on the front cover ("10e") and the bottom right corner of the title page. The rear wrapper shows a mild, historic water stain along the spine edge that lightly permeates the inner margin of the text block without obscuring any text or handwriting. Spine edge retains its original thread stitching. Internal pages remain complete, crisp, and highly legible. …
