The author does not assume the reader has any technical knowledge of the natural sciences, their history, or politics, and addresses his book to everybody who is concerned about the future of science and its place in society. This text provides an in-depth but highly readable understanding of the many factors which have heavily weighed upon the objectivity of scientific systems and the freedom of scientists. A career scientist now sees their work fully largely by corporate forces as a potentially profitable endeavor, and Ziman explains the steps in history which lead towards this shift away from the individualistic, "disinterested" pursuit of knowledge and into the entanglement with particular interests. The image of modern science presented here really should be required reading for those who profess to love science, as it would shift their romance away from the imagined public notion that science IS objective & free and into a greater love for how it CAN be objective & free. This work provides fundamental details for truly coming to see science through a scientific or "aperspectival" lens; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; ix, 289 pages.…
