FIRST EDITION. A novel of love, ambition and moral compromise, set partly against the backdrop of British expatriate life in Brazil, and offering an early literary glimpse of the rapidly developing Rio de Janeiro, particularly its contrasts of the glitz and grandeur of the Avenida and Copacabana to the squalor of the quays and markets. Kitching follows two expatriates whose cynical ideas about love are tested by a succession of sexual entanglements, murder, and professional failure. A contemporary review in the Spectator found the novel crowded with incident, although it considered the two principal characters less compelling than the minor figures surrounding them. An interesting early literary portrait of Rio at the beginning of its emergence as a modern international city; scarce. BOOK: Publisher’s green cloth with yellow lettering; faded to spine ends. DUST JACKET: Unclipped jacket priced 7/6 net to inner flap, nicked to extremities, especially spine ends; attractive illustration though uncredited.…
