Dawson, Bookseller & Stationer, Montreal" The author (1806-1879) was a French political economist who, in his early years, became a convert to Saint-Simonism, a doctrine of socialism which was based on the precepts of Claude Henri de Rouvroy Saint-Simon (1760-1825) and which became for a time a near-religion among its followers. Success followed success, culminating in the important part he played in bringing about the conclusion of the commercial treaty between France and Great Britain in 1860. He was created a member of the Senate in 1860 and a grand officer of the Legion of Honour in 1861. This work was first published in Paris in this same year, as well as in Manchester. ~~~ cf.
