John Bascom's later (1878) textbook Comparative Psychology is the earliest American work to use that title, and its theistic approach anticipates some arguments found in much later evolutionary works. Provenance: Bears owner signature of Charles Richard van Hise (1857 - 1918), an American geologist and academic, an undergraduate at UW when this book was printed.
