A 1st edition of Burroughs first novel (written in 1911) and the first in the Mars series, though his 5th book published. Frontispiece and all 3 internal plates by Frank E Schoonover are present. However the plate opposite page 224 is loose & laid in. The red lettering on the front board and spine is clear, sharp & bright, however a little darkened on the spine. The front & rear hinges are broken with the webbing showing. Inscription on the FFEP "Fred - Dec. 16.18 John Thompson". The last page and RFEP are loose. There is damp staining to the edges of the pages to varying degrees throughout. A fair or filler copy of an seminal ERB 1st. Seller Inventory # 009114
