Synopsis:

At the time of his first visit to Italy in 1898, the American artist Maurice Prendergast (1858 - 1924) was regarded by many as an up-and-coming talent, renowned for his cutting-edge Impressionist watercolours and experimental monotypes. The remarkable body of work he produced during this trip, and during a second in 1911, would earn him great acclaim and secure his position within the vanguard of American Modernism. Beautifully illustrated throughout, and with contributions from a selection of international scholars, Prendergast in Italy is the story not only of this much-loved painter's travels through the land of the Renaissance, but also of the dramatic impact they had on his A uvre.

About the Author: Elizabeth Kennedy is Curator of Collection at the Terra Foundation for American Art. Nancy Mowll Mathews is Eugenie Prendergast Senior Curator of Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Art at the Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown, Massachusetts.
