pp. vii, 259 (i.e. 255), followed by twelve unnumbered leaves of advertisements by the publisher and various local and national firms. Notable advertisements include The Manitoba Free Press, various local retailers, transport services for new emigrants via the Windsor and Lake Line Steamers, and a remarkable, historically significant advertisement for the sale of "Half-Breed Lands." Duodecimo [12mo.] (14 x 18.5 cm). Illustrated with various in-text illustrations, four engraved plates ["The Landing at Fort Garry on the Assiniboine", "Winnipeg Water Works", "Indian Graves", "View of St. Boniface from Winnipeg"], one folding map (of two) ["The Dawson Route and Proposed Water Connections with the Canada Pacific RR"], and a folding plan ["Plan of the City of Winnipeg, 1876"]; each crisp and without blemish. Regrettably, lacking the "Map of the Province of Manitoba and part of the district of Keewatin and North West Territory" which is normally affixed to the rear matter. Includes the noted printing error with pages 121-124 omitted from the sequence. Bound in publisher's original vibrant forest green cloth with sharp gilt-and-black lettering and ornamentation to the spine and front board; charming blind-stamped floral vignette to centre of rear board. Cloth extremities very lightly rubbed; slight fraying to the head of spine, heel bumped. A small period accession sticker is affixed to the base of the spine. Internally, the volume remains well-preserved, bears the lilac ex-libris plate of the Bowdoin College Library which is affixed to the front pastedown, small unobtrusive circular institutional blindstamp to the title leaf, charming period bookseller's manuscript description pasted to the the ffep. Text-block remains otherwise bright, clean and unmarked with firm, sound binding. Overall, very good. Provenance: A unique and historically significant association copy once belonging to the prominent American lawyer and land speculator, Cyrus Woodman (1814-1889). Woodman was a distinguished member of the Bowdoin College Class of 1836 and a lifelong benefactor of the institution. Bears Woodman’s bold signature and is specifically dated "1885" in his hand. This date is of enormous historical consequence for Manitoba and the young nation: 1885 would witness the tumultuous events of the North-West Resistance in Manitoba and modern-day Saskatchewan under the leadership of Métis leader Louis Riel. The present offering appears to have been returned to his alma mater, likely as part of his personal bequest, before being deaccessioned from the Bowdoin College Library archives. See Peel 780. Right of withdrawal
If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.
Information regarding the right of withdrawal
Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Black's Fine Books & Manuscripts, 317371 Black's Fine Books & Manuscripts, 1-3485 NORTH SERVICE ROAD, L7N 3G2, Burlington, Ontario, Canada, +1 (416) 628-3773, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
