LA PEYRÈRE (Isaac de). Prae-Adamitae. Sive Exercitatio super versibus duodecimo, decimotertio, & decimoquarto, capitis quinti Epistolae D. Pauli ad Romanos. Quibus inducuntur primi homines ante Adamum conditi. S.l. [Amsterdam], s.n. Prae-Adamitae. Systema theologicum ex Prae-Adamitarum hypothesi. [Amsterdam], 1655. 12mo, 52, [14], 260, [7] pp., folding engraved map of the Holy Land. Contemporary speckled calf, gilt spine (head and first compartment lacking, corners worn). 12mo edition of the same year as the 4to first. Anonymous treatise, financed by Queen Christina, arguing that men existed before Adam, ancestor of the Jews alone, using Chaldean, Egyptian, Chinese and Mexican chronologies; the Flood was local. Ends with a messianic call for the return of the Jews to the Holy Land. Burnt in Paris in 1656; owned by Spinoza, Menasseh ben Israel planned a refutation. Early inscriptions on title. Complete with the map. …

Store description
